The holidays are a time to cut loose for kids and adults alike. While this time of year is the perfect time to indulge in sweet treats and delicious foods, there are ways to avoid cavities and other health problems as we approach the new year. We have compiled a selection of tips to get you through the holiday season with your tooth enamel intact.
Keep Up with Brushing and Flossing
One of the best ways to keep your teeth healthy during the holiday season is to continue to brush and floss regularly. Carry a toothbrush with you when you are traveling and set a schedule for brushing and flossing. We recommend brushing at least twice a day, for one to two minutes at a stretch.
Water is one of your best weapons for fighting tooth decay. Drink plenty of water to wash bacteria out of your mouth. Drinking water regularly is also a good way to fight bad breath and dry mouth.
Have Alternatives to Sweets
Candy and sweets are part of a number of holiday traditions. However, there are plenty of healthy alternatives. Dried fruits and vegetables are both filling and delicious and they are nowhere near as hard on your teeth as candy.
Limit Your Sugar Intake
You don’t always have to choose alternatives to sweets. You can also simply say no to a second slice of pie or additional piece of candy. Limiting your sugar intake allows you to enjoy all the foods you want, in moderation.
When all else fails, you can schedule an appointment with Dr. Neeley, your general dentist in Dallas, TX, following the holidays. Give our office a call to make an appointment for your check up or dental procedure today.
